May 2011 Project of the Month: OpenPetra

Non-profits and other charity organizations need all the help they can get, administratively speaking. Thats why its great to see something like what the folks at OpenPetra have put together. Flexible and customizable, it helps volunteers and non-profit agencies get the management tasks out of the way and focus on whats really important: the cause at hand.

OpenPetra has six customizable modules, including contact management, accounting, personnel management, event and conference management, financial management (specific to non-profits), and user accounts.

Now Google wants to sell you light bulbs

If you thought there were limits to Google’s plans for world domination, think again. The company’s announced plans to fill your home with electrical products including light bulbs, dishwashers and thermostats which can be controlled remotely via an Android device.

The plan is to create a series of devices that can communicate wirelessly with PCs and phones, under a project called Android@Home.

“We want to think of every device in your home as a connection to Android apps,” says product management director Hugo Barra.

Users would be able to turn lights and heating on and off, download music from the internet to a hifi and start home appliances running.

Other applications include Project Tungsten, an Android device for Music Beta designed to give more control over music playback.

Leak of Windows 8 Shows Potential Store Logo

Over the weekend, another build of Windows 8 has leaked out to the internet. This time it’s an 64 build of Windows 8 Enterprise milestone 3. Like with the previous leaks, it was featured on Beta Archive.

Also found in another leaked build of Windows 8 is more evidence of a Windows Store. Geek.com found what it believes to be a Windows Store logo in a 2424 PNG file. This is what it looks like blown up and retouched in Photoshop:

Other features believed to be a part of the Windows Store are similar to eisting App Stores from the likes of Apple and Google, or even bo Live Marketplace.

X-Factor hopefuls’ details hacked

As many as a quarter of a million X-Factor contestants may have got a little more exposure than they bargained for, thanks to a hacking attack.

The wannabe stars – some as young as 12 – have been warned that their email addresses, zip codes, phone numbers dates of birth and gender may all have been captured. Financial details, though, have never been taken by the X-Factor and therefore aren’t under threat.

“We are taking this matter very seriously and are working with federal law enforcement authorities to investigate this illegal action,” Fox Bradcasting told contestants in a letter.

“The X Factor will never ask you to email personal information such as financial data, credit card numbers, Social Security numbers or the user name or passwords you use to access other websites.
