“Cloud” is a surprisingly apt metaphor for delivering IT services. The cloud may well be a ubiquitous part of the technology landscape these days, but it can be pretty difficult to work out just what people mean when they talk about it. Although the basic definition seems clear enough, suppliers have found a multitude of ways to package their offerings as being part of the cloud.
With each claim stretching the definition a little further, it gets increasingly hard to work out just what this cloud is and how it changes things. In the face of all that fuzziness, how do you go about deciding whether the cloud is right for you? What do you need to do in order to purchase a cloud infrastructure that matches your needs?
This paper discusses what the cloud is and the different types of cloud which are available. It then looks at how a cloud infrastructure differs to a traditional one, and hence outlines the implications this has for specifying and procuring such an infrastructure.
